An explosion caused the death of 20 soldiers Cambodia and the wounding of several others at an army base in Kampong Speu province, in the western part of the country. Prime Minister Hun Manet announced this in a post on Facebook, without giving further details on the cause of the explosion.
“I am deeply shocked by the news of the accident,” said the head of the government of Phnom Penh, extending his condolences to the families of the victims. Hun Manet also added that he had ordered the Ministry of National Defense and the armed forces to urgently organize the funerals of the soldiers killed.
Meanwhile, images showing a one-story building shrouded in smoke began to circulate on local social media. Residents of a nearby village also published photos of broken glass in the windows of their homes.
