“I sat and thought I could take a bottle of scotch and drink it and get drunk. I thought you don’t have to be crazy to commit suicide. I thought about going to the Delaware Memorial Bridge and jumping.” These are the words of US President Joe Biden who, recounting his pain over the death of his first wife and their daughter in an interview with radio star Howard Stern, said he had thought about suicide. Biden does not drink and has never drunk alcohol. In December 1972, while Joe Biden was the senator-elect, his wife Neilia and his daughter died in a car accident, while his two children were injured.
The US president also said he was willing to discuss publicly with his Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump, who he will face in the November elections. When asked by host Howard Stern whether he would engage in a public debate with his predecessor, the 81-year-old replied: “I will, somewhere. I do not know when. I would be happy to do it.”
