LAMEZIA TERME «Come on over here, my father is here and wants to talk to you… Let’s meet right away because look, I’m stressed… You have to shut your mouth, Enzo!». The tones are loud, big words fly, and the risk that everything will degenerate is very high. Also because the conversation intercepted by the investigators of the Anti-Mafia District of Milan has among the protagonists an alleged prominent element of the ‘Ndrangheta club active in the Lombardy capital and who ended up at the center of the recent operation, conducted by men of the Guardia di Finanza, which led to the arrest of 14 people.
In fact, there is one at one end of the phone Angelino Giacobbe (born 1980) son of Salvatore (born 1952). On the other end of the line, however, there is Enzo, a subject “burdened by police records for brawling and illicit trafficking of narcotic substances”, notes the investigating judge in the order. It is July 25, 2019 and the topic, only apparently of little importance, risks exacerbating tensions between different “groups”.
The quarrel and the father’s intervention
«Enzo, I’m… the dad. What’s the problem?”, Salvatore Giacobbe himself intervenes in the discussion, asking for explanations from the other interlocutor. «(…) they promised me some kitchen things, I already gave all the money and I still don’t have this kitchen», explains the man. «(…) I’m living in boxes and I can’t understand when they bring me things!». Giacobbe, having learned the problem, shows understanding and invites the man to meet him in a bar near the station, “let’s try to sort this thing out, among the villagers!”, says Giacobbe again. «If there has been some mix-up, do you know me? Here you are. Come and you and I can talk about it.”
The facts, however, don’t go exactly as imagined. The following day, in fact, the son reported to Salvatore Giacobbe that he had heard from “the one in the kitchen”, who had agreed to meet with them, but in a different place from the “Baldassarre Café”, “sending Jacob into a rage” writes the investigating judge in the order, telling his son that they would not go “to the place this Vincenzo decides”. Jacob, therefore, invites his son to tell him that «if he wants to talk to him he will have to go where they say also because this Vincenzo “is a special guard and I don’t go to get stopped”». At this point, as emerged from the wiretaps, Angelino explains that Vincenzo would have sent Giovanni Caridi’s number to this person “so we can get him out of the way”.

The imposition of the location works and actually, as reconstructed by the investigators, the meeting took place on 7 August 2019 at the “Baldessarre Cafè”. The victory of this tug of war, however, is only a small illusion for the Jacobs. There is, in fact, a dangerous unexpected event: at the meeting this Enzo «introduces himself as Luigi Aquiliano, husband of Rosaria Mancuso and therefore son-in-law of Antonio Mancuso “Zu ‘Ntoni”» (not investigated in this investigation), the latter “prominent element of the powerful ‘Ndrangheta clan of Limbadi”, writes the investigating judge in the order, upsetting the Giacobbes’ plans. After the meeting the music changes and also the tones of Salvatore Giacobbe with his son. «Angelo didn’t come soon! Then I’ll explain… We’re not even pinco ball… but maybe you have no idea who came! Okay?… So we are not talking about who is right, who is right, whoever is wrong gets the blame!”, writes the investigating judge in the order. And again: “I’m sorry that I didn’t know the things and I didn’t even know how to answer, even though I obviously answered in my own way…”. Furthermore, from the conversation emerges the story linked to the repair of a car and the rental of a van costing 1,000 euros, an amount that Angelino Giacobbe should have paid and paid, instead, by Enzo but with a bad check. «This crooked brother of yours doesn’t understand shit! But why do you always have to have Christians call me? They are brothers with me, aren’t they? Because I told this guy everything about him, right?”. In a conversation intercepted the following day – 8 August 2019 – Salvatore Giacobbe speaks with his other son about the affair linked to Angelino. «Yesterday he came to visit me… you know, that one over there… Luigi himself came, who would be the son-in-law of that one from Limbadi…”the investigating judge still reports in the order. «This boy’s wife is the daughter of one of Limbadi’s two “older brother” brothers!». During the conversation, as reported by the investigating judge in the order, Salvatore Giacobbe’s anger rises, aware both of the risks linked to a possible clash with the Mancusos, and because he would not have wanted to ruin a relationship lasting more than ten years.
«Do you know who Enzo’s brother is? This is Luigi… he’s the brother of the one who paid for the Tripodi murders in Gioia in the ’80s and ’70s, okay? This crooked brother of yours doesn’t understand shit! Well, they would be the ones who, when Franciceddu, Virgato, Filippo were there, when I went to Vibo… do you understand? Close friends with those of Gioia who until the other time told me “see that Luigi says hello to you that they arrested him…” he was sorry for that fact and you think… Luigi’s brother, the big one is 80 years old! After the outburst, Salvatore Giacobbe summons Angelino, “severely reprimanding him, due to the importance of the family with which he had put him in difficulty”, notes the investigating judge in the order. And, even in this circumstance, he peremptorily explains “who these people are”. «(…) that is the brother of this boy’s father-in-law here… this boy married Nino Mancuso’s daughter! Of the big one, the biggest one, what he had to do (…) at the Port of Gioia Tauro, understand? It’s not that they are people who…”. ([email protected])
