The director of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, who announced his retirement in 2021, has long been courted by the Duffer brothers
After declaring that he will retire as a director in 2021, it seems that Frank Darabont returned from retirement to direct two episodes of the final season of Stranger Thingsexpected to debut on Netflix during 2025.
The total episodes should be eight and Darabont would have directed episodes 3 and 5, as reported by the site The InSneider, of the well-known Hollywood scooper. Sneider added that the show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, seem to have offered Darabont the right project to come out of retirement.
If you’re not familiar with Darabont, he only directed four films in his career, including The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and The Mist. He hasn’t directed a film since 2007 and the reasons are varied, from canceled projects to creative differences with production.
Actor Thomas Jane, who worked with Darabont in The Misthad mentioned that the director had effectively been blacklisted in Hollywood for suing AMC over The Walking Dead. In short, Darabont ended up filing a pretty hefty lawsuit against AMC, and it seems he was right: he ended up winning the case and pocketing nearly $200 million.
Stranger Things 5, the grand finale
As both Maya Hawke and Finn Wolfhard recently stated, none of the cast of the series read the scripts for the grand finale. In a recent interview with Access Online, the interpreter of Mike Wheeler revealed that he is not aware of how the story will end, but that he dreams of an ending in The Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King.

“Actually, I’d like a Lord of the Rings-style happy ending“, revealed Wolfhard. “They’re stalling in giving us the script for the last episode, we’ve read the story up until the penultimate episode, so we’re all on edge to find out what will happen in the finale“.
