The action plan, code-named “Menai Bridge” in the event of the death of British King Charles III, is being reviewed by the government and is regularly updated. The plan includes the announcement of Charles III’s death, a period of official mourning and details of his state funeral. Development of the plan began in September 2022, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II and bereavement events. Now the plan, codenamed “Menai Bridge”, sees Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the Cabinet Secretary and other officials being the first to know of Charles III’s death. Subsequently, Charles III’s eldest son, Prince William, will be proclaimed king and will make a speech to the nation. While reviewing aspects of the plan is standard procedure, it is now being actively updated in light of Charles III’s cancer diagnosis. Sources say Princes William and Harry were asked to think about their funerals when they were still teenagers, “choosing the music, the flowers, the prayers and who would read them”.
