Several chicks died during a fire that broke out during the trade fair in Venticano, in the province of Avellino. The Fire Brigade team from the Grottaminarda detachment intervened on site.
The fire started at 05.38 today 26 April 2024 in via del Foro in Venticano, within the trade fair which takes place every year in the small municipality of Irpinia. The event attracts thousands of people every year attracted by over 300 exhibitors spread over an area of 30 thousand square meters.
The fair is a “piece of economic history” of the province as underlined by the Pro Loco, and in this history part is occupied by animal trade. The fire started inside one stand used for the sale of animals including chickens, chicks and rabbits.
Even though the fire extinguishing operations initiated by the security staff at the fair began immediately and were then completed by the Fire Brigade of the Grottaminarda detachment, who also made the structure safe for the most fragile animals locked inside the cages there was nothing to be done.
Despite the efforts of the operators some chicks died, and on site the Radiomobile unit of the Carabinieri of Mirabella Eclano carried out the investigations within their competence. The sale of animals is not only still permitted in our country, but it is customary for them to be kept in cages at night, thus exposed to the tragic events that can always happen during a large exhibition like the one in Venticano.
It’s not the first time this has happened. Chicks are the most fragile component of the poultry supply chain. Suffice it to say that between 24 and 40 million male chicks are killed every year because they are considered useless, a barbarity on which this year the Senate also intervened and approved a law to put an end to the barbarism.
