Another high-altitude tragedy. Two people were swept away by an avalanche in the municipal area of Valfurva, in Alta Valtellina. One of these died, while the other hiker involved managed to free himself from the snow and raise the alarm by calling for help. The accident occurred, in particular, between the Colombo bivouac and the top of Cevedale, at around 3700 meters above sea level. Experts from the Guardia di Finanza’s Alpine Rescue attended the scene, together with the Cnsas dog unit and the helicopter rescue.
The accident
The dead hiker was part of a group of nine people, all Italian. According to initial reconstructions, five people from the group descended from a slope, while another four descended from the normal Punta Cevedale route, at 3350 metres. Three of these were further to the left, while the fourth was further to the right and it was he who would later cause the fatal avalanche. The Sondrio Prosecutor’s Office has entrusted the investigations to the soldiers of the Sagf of Bormio.
