Wartsila, unions: MSC confirms project, meeting on 9 May

The first meeting took place between a delegation of MSC, the company RSUs and the territorial and national representatives of Fim, Fiom and Uilm on the future of Wartsila. This was reported in a joint note from the unions. During the meeting, the categories say, MSC presented the industrial plan relating to the production reconversion of the Trieste site, the timing of its implementation, with a total investment of 104 million.

The development of the project is envisaged in successive phases: restoration of internal areas and new layout of the factory, redefinition of the areas, moving and making systems more efficient, obtaining certifications (first prototype wagons with manual installation), installation of new systems and settings, start of the activity productive.

According to MSC, the unions say, when fully operational, 1,000 railway wagons and 3,000 trolleys will be produced annually (2 thousand for local production and one thousand for exports), with 300 workers employed, of which 180 on the production lines on two work shifts. The 300 employees will move from Wartsila to MSC with the legal procedure for the transfer of a business unit.

According to the plan, full employment is expected in July 2027, with the first 15 insertions in July 2024, the next 45 in January 2026, and a further 120 in September 2026.

In this period all employees will be involved in training plans also supported with regional public resources. MSC also plans to develop a wagon maintenance and logistics business in the future, which would employ an additional 100 workers.

“This is certainly an ambitious project, which if implemented, reconfirms the industrial vocation of the Trieste site, guaranteeing employment and avoiding the dismissals that workers and unions have been fighting against for almost 2 years now – they add – there are still aspects that will need to be clarified and resolved in the next few weeks if we want to respect the date of 30 June, the date by which Mimit intends to define the program agreement. First of all, the commercial agreement between Wärtsilä and Mcs, the responses to the requests for financial and infrastructural support made by MSC to the government and local institutions, the definitions of the union agreement. The discussion will continue between the union and MSC on May 9th at the Confindustria Trieste headquarters”.
