Giovanni Gentile 1944-2024 Because his death is still an open case? Eighty years after the not entirely clarified death of one of the most eminent philosophers of the twentieth century and ideologue of the twentieth century, the Villa Bertelli Foundation pays homage to him with a meeting, in which Luciano Mecacci, former researcher at the Institute of Psychology of the CNR of Rome and former professor at the Sapienza University of Rome and at the University of Florence and author of the essay The Florentine garland And the death of Giovanni Gentile (Adelphi, 2014; Viareggio prize and Acqui History prize), together with Giovanni Gentile, nephew of the influential politician and the Senator and philosopher Marcello Pera.
Giovanni Gentile -explains Professor Mecacci – he was not only one of the major philosophers of the twentieth century, but also one of the main protagonists of Italian cultural and political life in the fascist era (minister of public education; director of the Scuola Normale of Pisa, of the Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia and of other important bodies cultural). He was killed by a Patriotic Action Group (communist military formation) on 15 April 1944 following his membership of the Italian Social Republic. 80 years after his death, many questions still remain about the instigators, the perpetrators and the dynamics of the attack.
