THE MOURNING

The news of Davide’s death spread quickly, especially among the many colleagues who had come into contact with him over the years. Messages of condolence full of pain and affection for Davide have multiplied on the social profiles of his fellow soldiers, to whom everyone wishes the same “blue skies” that he had seen so many times while jumping with a parachute. The boy was as determined at work as he was affectionate in private. His greatest love was Sofia: they had been together since school and had just bought a house in Ospedaletto to move and, as they dreamed, expand their family.
The girl is heartbroken: «In a few minutes my life is over. I don’t understand what happened, because Davide was fine the day before.” It was his partner, who was sleeping next to him, who noticed that something was wrong and lent him first aid and attempt a desperate resuscitation maneuver.
In the meantime, her sister Daria was in the family home in Ospedaletto: «Sofia’s mother called my parents around two in the morning. They didn’t wake me up and I only learned of the incident at 5.30am. At first, I was a little angry that they didn’t take me to him, but now I appreciate the gesture. In my heart I keep the memory of last Friday, when Davide returned and we had family lunch at our house. Now I’m helping mum and dad with the funeral arrangements.
