Record-breaking rainfall hit Guangdong province in southern China. Numerous damages were suffered by the population
A series of floods are flooding cities in southern Chinain the province of Guangdong, in the densely populated area of the Pearl River delta following record rainfall in recent days. They are spreading in the area concerns about defense against great floods caused by extreme climatic events. The province, once nicknamed “the most productive in the world”, is in fact devastated by summer floods. Its defenses against destructive floods were severely tested in June 2022 when Guangdong was hit by one of the strongest storms in sixty years. Hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated.

Before 2022 it rarely rained this hard as it has done in recent days and the floods had never been so strong, according to a witness interviewed by the agency. Weather events in China have become more intense and unpredictable due to global warming, scientists said, with record rainfall and droughts eating away at the world’s second-largest economy, often at the same time. The rainfall record in April was broken in many areas of Guangdong, with cities such as Shaoguan, Zhaoqing and Jiangmen ranging from west to north of Guangzhou half submerged in floods.
