The exhibition will be inaugurated tomorrow, Wednesday 34 April at 5.30 pm “Water, Earth, Fire and Stone, commitment and respect for memory. Vajont a lesson”. The ceremony will take place in the atrium of municipality of Monfalcone and will remain open to visitors until May 7th. The exhibition is the first of a series of exhibitions dedicated to the project of the same name dedicated to the memory of Vajont and is promoted by Ermada Flavio Vidonis Group and from Municipality of Monfalcone which is a partner of the project.

It arrives two years after the frightening fires that devastated the Carso in 2022. And it is precisely to the volunteers and police forces who worked with extreme difficulty that the dedication and the main images of the exhibition itself go. The elements of water, earth, fire and stone are symbols of life throughout the history of humanity, but if not respected through correct maintenance of balance, they can become the warning for adverse events. The Vajont disaster finds elements of similarity, and significant food for thought, also in other tragic events that have affected our region, often united by the carelessness with which man relates to nature, understood as an ecosystem, of which man himself should be at the center and responsible.

Examples of this are the fires that devastated the Karst, the incessant erosion of the mountains, the violent hailstorms, the flooding of the rivers, partly favored by phenomena linked to climate change. The project intends to raise awareness of old and new generations of citizens and institutions on the issues of human activity in its very close relationship with the surrounding environment, addressing the drama of the Vajont in parallel with the increasingly frequent destructive events, enhancing the importance of knowledge and preparation within the framework of Civil Protection values.

And it is precisely in the similarity between the environmental disasters that unfortunately continue to heavily affect the places in which we live that the communicative content of our project finds space. What could be similar to the Vajont tragedy, due to human error and greed, with the Karst fires? What could be similar to calamitous events such as the flooding of rivers or canals – sometimes due to lack of maintenance and cleaning – and the collapse of roofs, trees and buildings due to tornadoes? In the long journey of the project, with the help of experts, witnesses, administrators, experts, managers of the Civil Protection and other bodies responsible for the defense and protection of the territory, we will analyze what has happened in our region in the last seventy/eighty years.

Documents and photographic material will be collected which will see the creation of an educational and memory journey through the four symbolic elements of the project. Through the images of professional and amateur photographers of yesterday and today, through the photographic and historiographical documentation made available by the participating municipalities, we intend to “rebuild to remember”. So as not to forget the indissoluble bond that unites man to nature, to foster a new and fruitful alliance in the protection of the planet.

Faced with the manifestation of nature in multiple and sometimes discordant forms – beauty, supremacy, dismay – a common “civil faith” is necessary in opposition to negligence and plunder towards the Earth, the one that hosts us, which is given to us as a gift and that we must preserve and conserve for generations to come.

And it is precisely on young people that the project focuses; young students, who from this initiative – partly carried out online – can draw indispensable lessons for the continuation of their lives and to in turn raise awareness among adults on the importance of safety, care of the environment and the territory. The geographical and geological conformation, characteristic of the Italian peninsula, makes our country a territory exposed to natural events. Sometimes they impact human activities to such an extent that they take on the dramatic aspect that we know well in Italy.

The project proposes three thematic trajectories: memory, the relaunch of environmental education and prevention. It enjoys the partnership of the Municipality of Monfalcone, the Municipality of Duino Aurisina Občina Devin Nabrežina, the Municipality of Pordenone, the Duino Aurisina Lions Club, the AJser 2000 Cultural and Sports Group, the Duinate Club, the Rilke Parents Association, the Speleological Group Flondar and in collaboration with the Alpina Family of the Ana Section of Trieste.
