Merchants become librarians for a day: it happens today, on the occasion of World Book Day which is celebrated on 23 April.
It’s been there for a few years already Net Vicenza Librarieswhich involves 92 municipalities and of which the Province of Vicenza is the leader, promotes the initiative “Librarian for a day”, which consists of proposing recognized figures of the community to take on the role of librarian in their municipality’s library.
Mayors, councilors, presidents of Pro Loco and presidents of football clubs have already sat behind the counter. This year it’s the traders’ turn, thanks to the involvement Of Confesercenti and Ascom Confcommercio.
They have the task of delivering books, collecting those already read, arranging the shelves, promoting initiatives organized by the library and, why not, also giving some reading advice. With the help and support, of course, of real librarians.
“The shops in our municipalities, particularly in the smaller towns, are prestheof of community – explains the provincial councilor with responsibility for the Vicenza Library Network – they are places where you meet and have a chat. This aspect unites them with libraries, which not only offer books, but also activities, animated readings, in-depth conferences, workshops for children. The hope is that from this “exchange” of roles they can be born collaborations between libraries and merchants.”
It will be fun, tomorrow, to go into the library and find the baker, the butcher, the hairdresser or the friendly face of those we are used to meeting in a completely different context. And it will be equally enriching for traders to experience a stimulating environment like the library, where they will also be able to find information and documents useful for their activities.
Two worlds that meet to discover that they are complementary in the task of keeping our territories alive.
