Germany, the transformation of gas networks is being discussed

Decommissioning or switching to climate-neutral alternatives such as biogas or hydrogen. These are the two options currently under discussion in Germany for the future of gas networks, as reported by the newspaper “Handelsblatt”. The President of the Federal Association of the Energy and Water Industry (Bdew), Kerstin Andreae, stated: “The transformation of gas networks will be a heterogeneous process spanning two decades, even if the conversion will not occur at the same pace everywhere.” A “major challenge” is to create generally valid and binding planning principles.

The German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection wants to create a binding framework for infrastructure transformation with the consultation process on the “Green Document, dedicated to the future of gas distribution networks”. The Laender, industrial associations and other actors were called to the debate. The ministry states that the different positions are now being evaluated. In the coming months, further meetings will be held with stakeholders to discuss the relevance and complexity of the transformation of gas distribution networks. At the end of the process, binding rules should emerge.
