Canicatti Web News – Foresters in Sicily will only deal with fires, campaign launched to protect places of culture

The forestry workers, with an employment guarantee of 151 working days, will be assigned exclusively to the firefighting activities of the Forestry Corps. This is what is foreseen in a circular from the regional Department of Labor following an agreement with the Command itself, the Department of Rural Development and the trade unions.

Albano’s words
“With this measure – declares the regional councilor for Labor Nuccia Albano – we consolidate the contingent for fighting the fires and, at the same time, we ensure that the workers have only one employer, namely the Forestry Corps, thus giving continuity to their work. Thus, the rules on strengthening fire-fighting measures are implemented to avoid, as has already happened in the past, that in the summer period, in which more fires are recorded, the number of forestry workers is small and is unable to make up for the hundreds of requests for interventions that come from all over Sicily. We must implement all possible measures to defend and conserve the forest heritage and protect the protected areas of our region, safeguarding public safety”.

The Sicilian Employment Centers will assign the workers based on the requests presented by the Forestry Corps and the Rural Development Department by April 12th, in order to allow selection by the 17th of the same month.

Cultural heritage prevention campaign
The Department of Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity, in view of the approaching summer season, has prepared the launch of the fire prevention and protection campaign in places of culture. Councilor Francesco Paolo Scarpinato has given a mandate to the general manager of the Cultural Heritage department, to all the superintendents and directors of the archaeological parks, museums, galleries, centers and regional libraries, to implement all the necessary interventions to ensure the safety of sites subject to fire risk.

“Considering the critical events of last year, characterized by high temperatures and devastating fires, we are initiating a series of preventive measures to guarantee the integrity of our historical and artistic heritage – states Scarpinato -. The protection of cultural heritage must be a fundamental priority for everyone, which is why we also trust in the commitment and sensitivity of every single individual.”
