An electrical outage is at the basis of the episode which saw, around 6.15 this morning, Saturday 20 April, the city wake up with the torches of the Eni refinery illuminated by the fire coming out of it and with an acrid smell in the air.
The company itself explains what happened by communicating that, precisely because of this electrical outage, the general block of the running system was immediately activated with the consequent intervention of the torch safety system. A system that is activated to allow the escape of excess fuel that the storage tanks can no longer contain.
During the plant shutdown, the refinery explained, “a fire started in a limited part of the desulphurization plant (HDS2), which was immediately extinguished by the internal emergency teams. The situation – we read again in the company note – has always been under control and the all-clear was declared at 7.15am. Checks are underway to ascertain the causes of the event; the external bodies (Prefecture, Fire Brigade, Arpa, ed.) were promptly informed”.
