There Türkiye continues to show its support for terrorists. Saturday 20 April, the President Recep Tayyip Erdogan received the political head of the Hamas Political Bureau Ismail Haniyeh in Istanbul, at the Dolambache palace on the banks of the Bosphorus. The meeting took place behind closed doors, in the presence of a delegation from the Palestinian organization which also included former number one Khaled Meshal. The summit lasted two and a half hours and discussed the humanitarian situation in Gaza, the difficulties relating to the delivery of humanitarian aid to the civilian population, but above all the possibility of reaching a ceasefire with Israel and the growing tensions between the Jewish State andIran.

Before his face-to-face meeting with the sultan, Haniyeh met with Ankara Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, according to whom “L’occupation of the Palestinian territories by Israel and the West’s unconditional support are one of the main reasons for the problem of instability in the Middle East”. The head of Turkish diplomacy also stated that Hamas would be committed to operating exclusively as a political entity by demilitarizing its armed forces, al-Qassam brigades, in the event of the establishment of a Palestinian state. In a press conference with his Egyptian counterpart Salem Shoukry, Fidan declared that “if this crisis is not adequately resolved, if the Palestinians are not granted statehood, independence and sovereignty they deserve, such crises will continue to increase in the future ”.

The meeting between Erdogan and Haniyeh came at a time when negotiations between Hamas and Israel for a ceasefire and the release of hostages are in a phase of stall. The negotiations, mediated by the United States, Egypt and Qatarare not making progress because, according to Arab diplomats cited by Wall Street Journal, the Palestinian organization is not willing to accept Tel Aviv’s conditions. Precisely this reticence would have led the Doha authorities to threaten to expel Hamas leaders from the country.

The political leadership of the terrorist movement could, however, abandon the Emirate. Some media have reported that they are in contact with two other countries, includingOman who however refused to comment on the news.

The transfer of the organization’s leaders to another state could further slow down the negotiation process, as it would make it more difficult for mediating nations to get their messages across.
