How many people from Varese are running for the European Championships in June? To have an official count of their names we have to wait a few more days, when the deadline for submitting lists will expire. But as of now we can list the three leading candidates of the centre-right, the bustocchi Isabella Tovaglieri and Marco Reguzzoni and the mayor of Daverio Marco Colombo. Lega, Forza Italia (Reguzzoni however presents himself as civic) and Fratelli d’Italia. A nice three-way race that risks, needless to say, revealing itself fratricidal.
It is obvious that the possible election in Brussels does not pass only through the province of Varese, but rather through the vastness of the electoral constituency which includes Lombardy, Piedmont, Liguria and Valle d’Aosta. Equally obvious that success at the polls is also played out in the Varese area for those who refer to it politically, at work and of residence. To put it another way, the centre-right electorate, but not only, will look primarily at local candidates. AND here comes the beauty. Especially for Tovaglieri and Reguzzoni, bustocchi of Northern League origin, a figure that Reguzzoni has effectively abandoned to side with the Berlusconi supporters, after years of absence from the public scene, without a membership card. The two, needless to say, they fish in the same electoral basin, to the point that, it is inevitable, they will compete for each other’s consensus. With what consequences, it’s easy to imagine.
Then he intervenes to complicate the picture the proportional and preference system: this time the parties will each have to move on their own, and the candidates are forced to go and get the votes one by one. The fact that you will have to write the name of the chosen one on the card will not make it easier to achieve the objectives. A further difficulty will be the presence of political exponents arriving “from outside”, ready to descend on the province of Varese (some are already here with electorally unfriendly intentions) to try to convince voters to divert preferences to their names. In short, an additional problem for the Varese candidates; a problem mitigated by the fact that three preferences can be expressed on each card, but not all of the same gender, male or female. This is a method that favors alliances within the same party, that is, it is possible to make a ticket with some colleague from another territory but from the same constituency, so as to increase the consensus tally.
However, the real issue to be resolved remains the definitive percentages of the consultation. Last time the League elected about ten MEPs in the North West constituency, ours: it far exceeded 30 percent. Today the polls predict other numbers, so that Brothers of Italy could replace Salvini’s party in the results. With how many elected? If the forecasts are respected, the number of those who will land in the European Union parliament will be considerable. To the point that even the mayor of Daverio, that Columbus semi-unknown to a wider public, he might have a chance of being elected. In its own way almost a paradox compared to Isabella Tovaglieri, outgoing MEP and TV face, who will have to deal with the League’s declining percentages and internal competitors fighting with a knife between their teeth. Not to mention Reguzzoni, who returns to the scene after a period in which he almost disappeared and with a past that saw him as president of the Province of Varese and at the top of the Lega group in Montecitorio. In short, not exactly the latest arrivals.
Saying now how it will end would still be a gamble, despite any electoral consultation it is still a gamble. To get out of line at the polls, the intimate belief of being able to do it is not enough, perhaps by bringing personal, cultural, political and, last but not least, economic resources to the table. To win, you need votes.
