Accident at Molo Beverello: investigations underway after the violent impact of a fast ship

The analysis of the black box will be crucial to clarify the dynamics of the accident that occurred at the Molo Beverello in Naples, where the fast ship Isola di Procida violently hit the quay during the mooring maneuver. The accident caused 44 injuries, generating fear and excitement among the passengers on board, many of whom were foreign tourists.

The ship, managed by Caremar, had left Capri with 163 passengers on board when, during the approach to the quay, it was seen by some witnesses arriving at high speed, without managing to stop in time. The passengers, already standing and ready to disembark, were overwhelmed by the impact, with many of them falling down the stairs and ending up injured.

Rescue services intervened promptly, with several ambulances arriving on site. Of the 44 injured, 35 have already been discharged, while 9 remain under observation. The investigation into the accident is being conducted by the Coast Guard investigative unit, which will present the results to the navigation safety department and the Naples Prosecutor’s Office.

Inspector Admiral Pietro Giuseppe Vella also intervened at the site of the accident, coordinating the passenger assistance activities and the initial investigations. The ship remains moored at the Beverello pier to allow investigators to examine the causes of the accident.

Analysis of the black box data will be crucial to determining whether the cause of the accident was a technical failure, human error or the effect of a strong gust of wind.
