Tom Cruise absolutely wanted to be in the cast of the film
It has long been known that Tom Cruise he was very close to joining the cast of the adaptation of Watchmen by Zack Snyder, who recently confirmed that he met Cruise for a role, but that it didn’t work out because the actor wanted to play another superhero who had already been cast.
Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to promote Rebel Moon: Part 2: The Scar, Snyder confirmed that wanted “Tom Cruise for Ozymandias”, but that “Tom wanted to play Rorschach”. Snyder then added, “I mean, obviously, he could have done it.”
Unfortunately for Cruise, Snyder had already cast Jackie Earle Haley as the masked vigilante. “But yeah, we already had Jackie, and Jackie is incredible“Snyder added.”I definitely would have considered Tom, in retrospect, if I hadn’t had Jackie“.
Based on the DC Comics graphic novel of the same name by Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore, Watchmen is set in an alternate reality in the year 1985, at the height of the Cold War, and follows a group of mostly retired superheroes who investigate the murder of one of their own. Along the way, they uncover an elaborate and deadly conspiracy that challenges their moral limits due to the complex nature of the circumstances. David Hayter and Alex Tse have adapted the acclaimed comic book series for the big screen.

After that Watchmen managed to generate a profit and find a larger fanbase years after its theatrical release, some fans have wondered why Warner Bros. never greenlit a sequel.

In a recent interview, Snyder revealed the reason why a Watchmen sequel was never madesimply stating: “Because you know, frankly, comics don’t exist. For me, that’s why it never was“.
While unrelated to Snyder’s adaptation, the live-action Watchmen series which takes place 34 years after the events of the comics was produced by HBO in 2019. The nine-episode series received widespread critical acclaim and was awarded with 11 awards at the 72nd Primetime Emmys.
