Meloni: «The debate on Draghi at EU summits is philosophy»

“I’m happy that we’re talking about an Italian but this debate is philosophy. I will never agree with the tendency to decide before citizens vote. It is the citizens who decide the majorities, which is why I will not participate in the debate” on the possible appointment of Mario Draghi to the EU summit. “What interests me is that both Draghi and Enrico Letta, who are considered two pro-Europeans, tell us that Europe must be changed”. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said this at the end of the EU summit. “Draghi is an authoritative person but I’m saying something banal. This debate is good for headlines and campaigning but that’s not how it works. This trend of trying to decide who does what before citizens vote is a trend you will never find me on,” Meloni explained. “I’m interested in knowing if we want to change what hasn’t worked. How do we ensure adequate supply chains? How do we continue to continue this work on migration, which is not to say let’s relocate migrants to the EU, which will never work,” she insisted.

«I hope that in June there will be a different EU»

“This was the last European Council of this legislature, when we meet again we will be in a different scenario, and what I can hope for – despite the work we have done in this year and a half in which we have tried to change the priorities or the way to see Europe on some major issues, I am thinking of the very theme of migration, of that of environmental sustainability linked to economic and social sustainability – is that when we meet next time we will be faced with a different Europe, faced with a ‘Europe more capable of responding to these great challenges. To the great challenges of foreign policy, to the defense of our borders, to strategic autonomy, to fundamental supply chains, and to a less ideological and more pragmatic approach to citizens’ problems”. Meloni defined Enrico Letta’s work on the EU single market as “very interesting”. “For this I want to thank him,” he added.

«We support a common debt for EU challenges»

“We can have the best strategies but then we need resources. We know what the debate is in the EU on the common debt, a proposal supported by the Italian government. Letta proposes the theme of the ability to mobilize private investments to ensure that such capital remains” explained Meloni.

«Salis’s candidacy does not change government jobs»

“Ilaria Salis’s candidacy for the European elections does not change the government’s work”. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said this at the end of the EU summit, answering questions from reporters to whom she reminded them that “I have already said in the past that the politicization of the matter does not help”.

«Whoever wants to change the 194 is the left, not us»

On the issue of abortion “I also saw some fake news. Those who want to change the 194 are the left, not us. We want to guarantee only free choices.” Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said this at the end of the EU summit.
