A day as a pilot: the students of the Leopardi High School in Recanati closest to the STEM faculties.

The Recanati High School, which has always been sensitive to the intellectual and cultural needs of our country, has joined a very interesting project to encourage female students to approach areas that have so far usually been male-dominated, such as physics and flight, developed in STEM courses, which still today they unfortunately see a limited female presence.

On the morning of April 13, 2024, the girls and boys of the 3M Applied Sciences went to the amateur sports association Avio Club Madonna di Loreto to take part in a lesson in the hangar with the aim of putting into practice what they studied at school on fluid dynamics.

During the visit, an introductory lesson on the principles of flight, with reference to aerodynamic topics such as Bernoulli’s law, lift and drag, was followed by various group activities in the form of competitions. Quiz on the topics covered, creation of paper planes and mnemonic learning of the dialogues between the control tower and the pilot to be replicated via radios set on safe frequencies: these are the competitions carried out by the teams to win a voucher for an “air baptism” to be used returning to the airfield with their parents.

But the truly significant prize was precisely the opportunity to participate in an experience that allowed students not only to apply what they had learned in a theoretical way, but to approach also working areas related to scientific, technological, engineering and mathematical disciplines that play a crucial role in today’s society.
