Oman: condolences from Riyadh for flood victims

King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have sent messages of condolence to Sultan Haitham bin Tariq after 17 people died in floods in different parts of Oman.

Saudi leaders sent their deepest condolences to the sultan and the families of the deceased, the Saudi news agency “SPA” reported.

A group of schoolchildren and a driver died when their vehicle was overtaken, Omani authorities said.

Civil protection officials gave the death toll from the rains, which saw Oman’s northern Al Sharqiyah province hardest hit.

Omani police and army have deployed to the province to ferry citizens out of flooded areas

Heavy rains often cause flash floods in the sultanate, drawing onlookers from their homes to nearby dry riverbeds, known in Arabic as “wadis”. In the event of floods, these “Wadis” can quickly fill and sweep away things, people and vehicles that are nearby.
