CASTIGLIONE IN TEVERINA – Tomorrow morning at 10, in the Madonna dell’Uccelletto area, a stele will be inaugurated in memory of Pierino Corinti from Castiglione, one of the nine financiers involved in the massacre in Via Buttrio, which took place on 12 February 2013, as part of the celebrations of the “Day of Remembrance of the Foibe Victims”, in Rome, in the main hall of the “Sante Laria” Barracks, General Saverio Capolupo, general commander of the financial police, handed over to some family members, or to the mayors of the Municipalities of birth of the recipients, the Bronze Medal for Civil Merit, granted by the President of the Republic, Presidential Decree 26 September 2012. Mayor Leonardo Zannini announced this.

Following the betrayal of a German non-commissioned officer, the 9 financiers were taken by the Tito partisans first to Cividale del Friuli and subsequently to Canebola, in the municipality of Faedis.

There it was decided to shoot the soldiers, simply because they were Italian. They were, therefore, divided into three groups and escorted to inaccessible and isolated locations in the mountains and then massacred in the night between 26 and 27 April 1945.

In the aftermath of the Liberation, it was possible to identify the location of summary burial and recover the bodies of the fallen, then proceeding with the solemn funeral rite, celebrated on 20 July 1945 in the Ossuary Temple of Udine.

The places and the time in which the massacre took place are not far from the territories where the foibe were located and for this reason, just as on the occasion of the day of remembrance in which the medal was awarded, the stele also remembers all the victims of the foibe, with the aim of keeping the memory in everyone’s memory so as not to make the serious mistakes of history again.

In addition to the local authorities, the provincial commander of the financial police Carlo Pasquali, the major provincial and regional authorities and the school director Paola Adami will be present at the ceremony.

All pupils from the primary and secondary schools of Castiglione in Teverina will also participate.
