This morning the world of football was shaken by the death of Mattia Giani, a 26-year-old footballer who died at the Careggi hospital in Florence after suffering an illness yesterday during the match valid for the Eccellenza championship between Lanciotto Campi and Castelfiorentino. As the FIGC officially communicated, in Giani’s memory a minute of silence will be observed before the start of the matches of all competitions from today and for the entire weekend.
The message from Castelfiorentino United: «You fought as you used to do on the pitch, wearing our colours, but a cruel fate took you away. Honored to have known and appreciated you, first as a man and then as an athlete, we feel an immense void. Have a safe trip Mattia! A big hug to the family». The condolences of Gabriele Gravina, FIGC president: «I express my deepest condolences and that of the Italian Football Federation to Mattia’s family. The entire Italian football movement rallies around those who loved him, the Castelfiorentino club and the friends of the Tuscany Regional Committee of the National Amateur League. We are faced with a tragedy that has shaken everyone, which also occurred on the anniversary of the death of the late Piermario Morosini and on the same day in which the Roma footballer, Evan Ndicka, also fell ill. In recent years, much has been done to protect the health of members and such dramatic events remind us that prevention must always be a priority.”
