The first cycle of sampling of bathing waters by ARPA is underway in Friuli Venezia Giulia, in view of the opening of the 2024 bathing season on May 1st.

The water evaluation campaign was presented today, Monday 15 April, in Trieste.

Monitoring objectives: protecting the health of bathers and improving the quality of the ecosystem. National and European legislation – it was recalled – requires, starting from the month before the opening of the season, that monthly sampling be carried out to evaluate the microbiological parameters regarding Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci.

Arpa Fvg also carries out specific monitoring on microalgae that could have hygienic-sanitary implications such as cyanobacteria and the potentially toxic species Ostreopsis ovata.

The analyzes start today and tomorrow and continue on a monthly basis on 13-14 May, 10-11 June, 8-9 July, 5-6 August and conclude on 2-3 September.

A different calendar is foreseen for Lake Sauris where the bathing season is between 27 June and 21 August. For the regional councilor for environmental protection, Fabio Scoccimarro, it is «an activity that Arpa Fvg carries out in an extremely professional way with latest generation instruments, aimed at identifying any episodes of pollution in Fvg. In these very rare cases it is essential to make prior communication, which the Environment Agency also ensures through the daily publication of data on its website”.
