Celebrations at the home of the De Vizia Sanità Group. The Order of Surgeons and Dentists of the province of Avellino, by the Board of Directors, awarded the gold medal to Doctor Antonio De Vizia for fifty years of degree in Medicine obtained from the University of Naples Federico II, on January 29, 1974.

Congratulations from his wife, Dr. Daniela Cappuccio, from his daughters, Roberta, Marcella and Federica, from the employees of the Gepos Nursing Home in Telese, the GammacordSanniotac Polydiagnostic Center and the Amacenter Radiotherapy Center in Benevento.

The ceremony at the Irpinia Order was moving, where the professional successes of the 18 awarded doctors were retraced. Alongside doctor De Vizia, luminaries in every field of medicine. The president of the order, Dr. Francesco Sellitto, before proceeding with the awards ceremony, addressed the issue of public health as a fundamental right. Specifically, he urged the entire medical community to resist the winds of privatization, instead finding the lack of personnel among the points of a common struggle, particularly for rural areas; excessive waiting times; the poor development of preventive medicine and the need, which now seems accepted, for a single regional competition without the possibility of immediate migration.

It fell to the secretary of the Order, Dr. Rizziero Ronconi, to retrace the stages of Doctor De Vizia’s career.

The president of the Group, he recalled, after graduating in Medicine and Surgery, brilliantly achieved at the Federico II University of Naples in 1973/1974, achieved three specializations in just a few years: in “Hygiene with health management orientation” , subsequently in “Diseases of the respiratory system – Internal Medicine”, finally in Infectious Diseases. At the Policlinico Gemelli Catholic University in collaboration with Luiss Management University he specialized in “Organisation and management of healthcare companies”, he has published in journals in scientific disciplines and healthcare management.

Doctor with 4 specializations, he began his career as a medical assistant at the Cotugno Hospital in Naples. In November 1979 he was hired as medical assistant to the head physician Alfonso Ammendola at the Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi hospital in the province of Avellino. Doctor Antonio De Vizia was on duty at the hospital at 7.34pm on 23 November 1980. He was one of the few doctors to save himself in the devastation of the earthquake which caused the death of 90 people including healthcare staff and patients, despite being located right on the west side, compared to the central tower, of the hospital. He became the protagonist of immediate relief efforts.

One of his colleagues, Doctor Antonio Lucido, remembered his figure in those days as follows: “I have a clear memory of Antonio in those moments. He, a young thirty-year-old, thin and pale, with his blood-stained coat. I see him running, treating and providing aid, uninterruptedly, for 4 consecutive days.”

Doctor De Vizia assumed the position of head doctor of the Bisaccia Hospital, becoming a benevolent protagonist of the healthcare response to the needs of the population in an impervious and abandoned territory. Doctor Lucido also said of him: “If my colleagues were capable of waging war with letters of service and position statements, he always had the charisma of knowing how to reach an agreement between the parties.” For years teacher of the School of Nursing has always refused the emoluments, devoting them to the management of the school itself.

In the meantime, his rise as an entrepreneur, his first analysis laboratory in Benevento, Gammacord, the subsequent multi-diagnostic center Sanniotac, the vice-presidency on the board of directors of the “Villa Maria” nursing home in Mirabella Eclano, the presidency of the board of directors of the Gepos care of Telese Terme.

Today the De Vizia Sanità Group, with its healthcare hub, has around 200 operators, together with more than 50 external professional collaborations, guaranteeing a high level of employment in one of the most depressed areas of Southern Italy.

Furthermore, the healthcare group has been involved in offering free prevention days for oncological diseases for more than 10 years. Every year for two consecutive days, Doctor Antonio De Vizia opens his facilities completely free of charge to 300 women to guarantee them the performance of ultrasound and mammography tests and surgical consultations for the prevention of breast diseases.

For 5 years, he has been an advocate of the Telesia Pink Race, the pink walk where women from all over Campania, and beyond, come together in a collective, symbolic journey of prevention and treatment.

In 2021, it created the first affiliated private Radiotherapy Centre, the Amacenter, in Benevento, allowing a significant halt in healthcare migration in the field. Long applause in the room for all the awarded doctors, bastions of collective health and civility.
