the rules change, fewer tournaments are counted and a revolution in the rankings

Dal 2026 il ranking ATP will undergo a significant reform a return to criteria already adopted in the pastwith the aim of making the most balanced and fluid system. The score of each player will in fact be calculated on the best 18 tournaments playedone less than the 19 considered up to this year. To facilitate the transition to the new method, the ATP will eliminate the points relating to the nineteenth result as early as the first full week of January 2026an intervention that will produce immediate effects on the positions in the rankings, favoring some players and penalizing others.

For the top 30 of the ranking at the end of the 2025 season, the 18 valid results will include the four Grand Slam tournaments, the eight mandatory Masters 1000 and the six best placings obtained between the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 (not mandatory), the United Cup and the ATP 500, 250, Challenger and ITF tournaments.

The 500 will be affected by a further change: the mandatory tournaments for the top-30 will decrease from five to four, although the obligation to play at least one after the US Open remains; Monte Carlo and the United Cup will also be included among those that can be counted.

The consequences of this reorganization will immediately be reflected in the ranking. In particular, several Italian players will benefit from it: Lorenzo Musetti will keep his points haul unchanged, gaining positions in the top-10While Taylor Fritz will lose 245 points and slip behind Musetti, Alex de Minaur is Ben Shelton. A more marked decline will concern João Fonsecawhich will move back five positions, while Luciano Darderi will reach the best ranking of his career at number 24. Slight progress also for Lorenzo Sonego and Matteo Berrettini.

To complete the picture, the 2026 calendar will feature some tournaments postponed by a week compared to the previous year: This will result in a temporary loss of points before being able to defend them, with a temporary impact on the standings. Overall, the reform aims to simplify the calculation system and guarantee greater regularity in the performance of the ranking during the season.
