SARONNO – There are over 300 signatures accompanying the letter, registered in the Municipality, to request the suspension of the construction works of the new radio base station.
The building permit is dated 9 April but residents only saw the construction site “appear” in early May. Approaching the construction site area delimited by the red net, they discovered that the intervention involved the creation of a radio base station commonly called telephony antenna. The interventions continued rapidly despite the mobilization and concern of the residents who decided to start a collection of signatures sent to the Municipality “against the installation of the radio base station in via Venezia”.
“We believe that the creation of the radio base station undermines our rights, first of all the right to health and the right to our physical integrity” we read in the text.
There are various aspects addressed by the people of Saronno in their request to suspend “a work considered seriously prejudicial” which, moreover, is located a short distance from a kindergarten and at the entrance to the Lura Park, with a strong landscape impact.
“The radio base station – we read in the letter – is positioned close to homes, where children, people suffering from pathologies and the elderly also reside, who are constantly subjected to electromagnetic pollution harmful to health. We were not informed in advance of the installation of this antenna and nevertheless, as citizens residing locally, we had an interest in interfering during the authorization procedure”. And again: “The installation was authorized on private land, without first having identified alternative sites suitable for reducing the exposure of the resident population to electromagnetic radiation to the minimum possible. And the landscape impact was not taken into account for a repeater located in a green and residential area. The devaluation of the homes located in the circumstances of the mobile radio station is undoubted.”
In light of these considerations, the request of the 300 residents is simple “that the competent bodies immediately suspend the construction of the radio base station in Saronno via Venezia”.
The letter was addressed to the mayor Augusto Airoldi as delegate of the Municipality, to Arpa Lombardia department of Varese and Ats Insubria.
But what is a base station? “It is – as Arpa explains – the system made up of antennas, transceivers, control and communication equipment with the network, and support structures (poles, cabinets, power supply) which allow the radio coverage necessary for the operation of mobile telephone terminals (mobile phones) to be provided ). Each SRB is able to cover a limited area of the territory, called a “cell”, the size of which is a function of both the orography of the land and the number of users to be served simultaneously: the higher the density of users, the lower the spatial extension of the cell. For this reason, in densely populated urban areas the presence of several SRBs close to each other may be necessary”.
