Pixel 8A, here is the new Google smartphone that has almost become a Pro

Same processor of 8 and 8 Pro, same softwareidentical duration of updatesfurther improved screen: Google continues the curious and unusual (but useful for buyers) philosophy of making the Pixels of the A family the main and most dangerous competitors of its smartphones high-end.

The trend is confirmed again this year, with the arrival of new Pixel 8A, which costs 549 euros and even in Italy it can already be booked and is officially on sale from May 14th both on the Google Store and on Amazon and in some shops.

Google Pixel 8A, the technical characteristics

Compared to previous 7A (here is our test)the screen size does not change: 6.1 inches, which position the new Pixel 8A between the 6.2″ of the Pixel 8 and the 6.7″ of the Pixel 8 Pro. What changes is that now the display reaches up to 120 Hz refresh rate, compared to the 90 of the 7A and the 60 of the old 6A.

It also changes the processor, which is the Tensor G3 of the larger and more expensive brothers, and for the first time a 256 GB memory size is available (even if it still starts from 128), again with 8 GB of Ram. Furthermore, there are two new colors: light blue and aloe, which is a sort of pale green, which join the traditional black and grey. The battery is 4492 mAh, supports 18W fast charging and cameras there are 3 in total: two rear (64 megapixel and 13 MP ultrawide) and one 13 megapixel front.

Lots of software and lots of AI

A Pixel wouldn’t be a Pixel without a proper operating system and some magic related to artificial intelligencewhich also benefits the photographic sector: the phone should already come out with Android 14 and have good 7 years of updates (this is another first for the A range) both at the system software level and at the security patch level.

Furthermore, the new Pixel 8A will also have some AI-based features that should optimize the performance of photos and videos: Better Shotto choose the most serious expression among those of the people portrayed in an image; Magic Editor, to reposition and resize subjects or make the background brighter; Magic Eraser for quick editing and Audio Magic Eraser to remove unwanted sounds from videos, such as wind, crowds and other background noises.

Finally, the Pixel 8A also has integrated Google VPN (things?) and receives some of Mountain View’s latest smart features, such as Helpful Circle and Search (how does it work?)Call Filter for manage phone calls independently (our test)Transcribe the call and Clear Call.

The Google Pixel Tablet also arrives in Italy

At the same time as the announcement of the new smartphone, which can also be purchased in Unieuro and Vodafone stores (and also on Amazon and the Google Store) returning an old phone and by deducting 100-150 euros from the final price, Google has confirmed the availability of the Pixel Tablet: with 11″ screen and Tensor G2 processor, hardware-wise it is identical to what we saw a year ago at the I/O event.

There interesting news is that now it can also be purchased on its own, which lowers the economic entry threshold by almost 200 euros compared to 2023: we are talking about 499 euros for the 128 GB version and 619 euros for the 256 GB one, which become 599 and 719 euros respectively if you buy it with the charging base which turns it into a speaker and voice assistant.
