Helldivers 2: PC players won, Sony backs down on PSN account

Update: in these minutes Sony has released an official communication in which it states that it has evaluated the feedback received and for this reason has decided to backtrack on its decision: any plan related to the request for a PSN account to play Helldivers 2 on PC has been canceled and therefore nothing will change for active players and new users. The original story follows, edited for clarity.

A cyclone has hit Helldivers 2 in the space of a few days, i.e. since last May 3rd Sony announced the obligation to have a PSN account to play Helldivers 2 on PC, an obligation which comes into force from today, Monday 6 May for new buyers and from May 30th for those who have already bought the game.

In just over 72 hours the situation worsened and the game was flooded with negative reviews. After the announcement of this news, players began to protest vigorously by flooding Steam with negative reviews about Helldivers 2, To date there have been over 200,000 negative reviews on the game and the review bombing shows no sign of decreasing, on the contrary, the negative reviews are growing hour by hour.

Players don’t agree and don’t want to be forced to create a PSN account, the controversy grows and Sony in the meantime has modified the Helldivers 2 FAQ on the official website to offer greater clarity on the matter, but it’s not enough.

Meanwhile, the CEO of Arrowhead also makes his voice heard, assuring that the studio is on the side of the players and reveals ongoing negotiations with Sony to try to resolve the situation. However later CEO Johan Pilestedt he will admit that he didn’t have enough discussions with the publisher but to have known for some time that sooner or later the game would require a PSN account to run on PC, thus taking part of the blame for this communication chaos.

Over the weekend, the publisher removes Helldivers 2 from sale in over 170 countries where it is not possible to register a PlayStation account, Steam also intervenes by offering a refund to anyone who requests it even after two hours of play, there is even news of a refunded player with more than 200 hours under his belt.

At dawn on May 6th, Sony announces that it has listened to player feedback: The PSN account will continue to not be necessary to play Helldivers 2 on PC and you will therefore be able to continue playing even without a PlayStation profile.
