Proxmox announces support for importing virtual machines from VMware

Proxmox announced the launch of version 8.2 of its virtualization platform, Proxmox Virtual Environment. Among the new features, one in particular stands out: one new wizard to migrate virtual machines from VMware.

Proxmox VE 8.2 facilitates migration from VMware

For many companies, Proxmox is becoming the reference for virtualization and the replacement for VMware ESXi, which has so far remained unchallenged in its dominant position. It is therefore not surprising that the Austrian company is investing resources to make this transition as simple as possible. In Proxmox VE 8.2, the company has introduced a feature for directly import virtual machines from VMware ESXi and vCenter. You can import them via either a wizard directly in the GUI or via API. The system imports the virtual machines keeping most of the settings unchanged and “translating” them to make them compatible with Proxmox VE.

It should be noted that the company writes in the release that the import functionality “gives users the ability to import [le macchine] guests directly from other hypervisors”which suggests that there is the possibility of seeing support for other hypervisors in addition to VMware, such as Hyper-V and Nutanix AHV.

Among the other new features we find the possibility of automatically installing Proxmox VE on servers bare metalone new firewall implementation which uses nftables instead of iptables (in the “technological preview” phase and therefore not yet ready for its debut), the passthrough of devices to LXC containers directly from the settings in the graphical interface and new advanced settings for backups that allow, for example, to limit bandwidth.
