What is the main problem of every electric car if not autonomy and the duration of the charge of a battery or of this component itself? By now, producing one’s own or having proven methods for recycling used electric car batteries seems essential, which is why the project by Volvo and another giant in the sector is so important.

Recycling batteries, Volvo now believes in it

According to many experts, the future will see more and more growth of a very particular sector of the world of electric batteries, namely that of the recycling of used components of this type by companies that produce cars. In fact, companies like BYD are already working to produce components of this type and, consequently, to recover the exhausted ones as much as possible.

Precisely in these hours, a partnership agreement was signed between the European company and the giant Contemporary Amperex Technology for the recovery and recycling of used electric car batteries. The project aims to reduce harmful emissions not only during the operation of cars but also of the processes for building batteries through the recovery of nickel, cobalt, lithium from batteries that are now exhausted and at the end of their life cycle.

There are several proven processes with which a used battery can be treated, recovering over 90% of elements of this type for the production of a new component. It is not yet clear which one will be chosen by CATL and Volvo but we know that this agreement is of historic importance. In fact, it will allow the brand to cut costs and, indirectly, increase the life of its EV batteries substantially.
