The infamous lawyers of Nintendo they have now moved their aim up Garry’s Modin a rather surprising way, hitting the authors Facepunch Studios with the accusation of copyright infringement and requesting, in practice, the removal of themed content released in 20 years of gaming history.
For those who don’t know, Garry’s Mod is a game sandbox born as a Half-Life mod and then becoming a practically independent title, with a life of its own and with impressive support from the community, which over the years has made it become a gigantic sandbox.
Among the many contents and various customizations, there are also many Nintendo-themed ones, and it is obviously on these that the ninja lawyers have concentrated, requesting their immediate removal and causing quite a few headaches given that contents linked to the titles of the house of Kyoto many have come out over the course of almost 20 years of game history.
It’s just strange that it took so long
“Some of you may have noticed that certain particular Nintendo-related items in the Workshop have recently been removed,” wrote the Facepunch team, “This is not an error, the removal requests they came from Nintendo.”
“Honestly, it is Right Like this. These are contents that belong to them and what can or cannot be done with them is up to them. They don’t want you to play with these things in Garry’s Mod, it’s their decision and we must respect it, removing everything we can remove.”
Indeed, there is nothing irregular in Nintendo’s request, whose attention in this area is legendary. We know well how the company is careful to protect the integrity of the intellectual properties of its catalog by all means, so the attack on Garrys’ Mod should not come as a surprise.
Yet, the fact that this content has remained practically unscathed from 2006 to today makes Nintendo’s action rather surprising, which evidently only now became aware of the existence of these elements in Garry’s Mod.
