Baldur’s Gate 3: The German government wants similar games developed in Germany

To the German government I’d love for a work of the quality of this to come out one day Baldur’s Gate 3 from a local studio. It wasn’t just any official who said this, but Michael Kellner, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Economy and Climate Action of Germany, on the occasion of the presentation of the award for best international game given by the nation at Baldur’s Gate 3.

A nation that supports development

To understand this statement we need to take a step back and look at how things work there on a political level.

Incidentally, the German government actively supports local studios by giving them huge public funds since 2020 and rewarding excellence with large sums of money, intended as support and encouragement for future works, during the annual German Computer Game Awards (Deutscher Computerspielpreis) ceremony. For example, Chained Echoes received €100,000 for best retro role-playing game in the 2023 edition, while Everspace 2 had the same sum in this year’s edition. Clearly both games were developed by studios based in Germany. This year’s awards ceremony was an opportunity to praise the work of Larian Studios, based in Belgium, giving it the recognition of best international game, which however does not include a cash prize, but above all serves as a model .

Kellner would like a Baldur’s Gate 3 because it would be a strong sign of expansion of the local industry: “As the federal government, we want to make an important contribution to the sector with our new fund for video games. The funds serve to ensure that tomorrow the best international game is developed in Germany.”
