Tour de France, Girmay leads the sprint in Turin and makes history

Piacenza-Turin, the third stage of the Tour de France, the longest of the 2024 edition with its 230 kmit was the most classic of transfers after the fatigue and great heat of the previous two days. After the catwalk in the historic center of Piacenza, which showed off all its wonders, there was the official start on the via Emilia Pavese, with the green jersey Abrahamsen trying the sprint. Having been on the run since the Grand Depart in Florence, the Norwegian quickly got up again also because the stage was designed for a sprint finish for the group. The Norwegian still takes the first mountain grand prix, Pedersen the sprint in Alessandria, while the blue Sobrero takes the challenge near home in Alba.

Everything is set for the high-speed finale along the avenues of Turin, but the Alpecin team, credited among the favorites for the victory, has some unexpected events, with the world champion van der Poel, member of Philipsen’s train, having a puncture, and then Philipsen himself who, due to his fall about 2 km from the finish, remained behind in the second section of the group, as did Cavendish. The winner at the finish line is the Eritrean Girmay, for the first historic victory at the Tour de France, which beat Gaviria and De Lie. Pogacar lost the yellow jersey due to a question of positions in favor of Carapaz, but with Evenepoel and Vingegaard there are no seconds of distance.
