Switzerland coach Murat Yakin drew 1-1 with Scotland in the second match of Group A of EURO2024. And he did it in the name of Xherdan Shaqiri. After the Scottish advantage scored by Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay, the 32-year-old former Bayern Munich, Inter and Liverpool player (among others) decided to immediately put the scores back on level terms with a Eurogoal. Shaqiri himself commented on his feat to UEFA channels after the match.

The 32-year-old, number 10 of the Chicago Fire, gave his national team the equalizer with real magic, with the Scottish goalkeeper Angus Gunn who could never have predicted the Swiss elf’s first-time shot.
Shaqiri, who also became the only player to have scored in all the last three European Championships and in all the last three World Cups, commented on his Eurogoal to UEFA channels thus: “I saw that the goalkeeper was outside the posts and I I said: ‘Come on, put it in’. It was an important goal and also a very beautiful one.”
Shaqiri then continues with an analysis of the match: “We’re a bit disappointed not to have won the match, but in the end I think it was a fair 1-1. Scotland fought until the end and also tried to score goals , but I think we were the better team and we had the better chances. If we had scored to make it 2-1, perhaps the game would have opened up more and we could have scored another goal and take advantage of our opportunities in the next challenges.”
