Hummels leaves Borussia Dortmund after 13 years

(ANSA) – DORTMUND, JUNE 14 – Mats Hummels leaves Borussia Dortmund after 13 years. “Dear fans, my time in black and yellow is coming to an end after more than 13 years. It has been a great honor and a great joy for me to have played for BVB for so long,” said Hummels, quoted in the press release of club. Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl, who played alongside Hummels at the club, said BVB are “undoubtedly losing an outstanding personality”, describing the defender as “one of the last of his kind in football”. In his two spells at Dortmund, punctuated by three seasons at Bayern Munich between 2016 and 2019, the 35-year-old won two German championships and two German Cups, also reaching the Champions League final in 2013 and 2024; in this latest edition he was also named in the UEFA team of the season. Hummels – world champion with Germany in 2014 – has declared that he wants to continue playing, preferring a transfer to another German or European club to be close to his son, who lives in Munich. According to the German media, he would have aroused the interest of Milan. Hummels’ departure comes a day after Dortmund manager Edin Terzic made a surprise announcement that he wanted to leave the club, just two weeks after taking them to the Champions League final. Another Dortmund veteran, striker Marco Reus, has also announced that he will leave the club at the end of this season. (HANDLE).
