Coach Julio Velasco’s Italy women’s volleyball team (after Fefè De Giorgi’s men’s team) will also participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2024 Volley Nations League Finals, scheduled in Bangkok (20-23 June).
The 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-23) victory for the Netherlands over Canada made qualification for Paris certain, through the large lead in the world ranking, and at the same time gave them the pass to the final act of the Volleyball Nations League.
With the matches against South Korea (today at 12.30 pm Italian time) valid for Pool 6 of the VNL, United States (15 June at 8.30 am Italian time) and Serbia (16 June at 8.00 am Italian time) still to be played, the Italians will try to gain the best possible position with a view to the VNL quarter-finals and to strengthen their position in the ranking in anticipation of the draw for the Olympic groups which will take place in Bangkok on 19 June (at 1pm Italian time).
“There is great satisfaction with this qualification; we have always been aware that the Italians would demonstrate all their great value and with a series of excellent performances they secured the Olympic pass. A special thanks, in addition to the girls, goes to Velasco and to all his staff: together they did a great job, especially considering the little time available”, said the president of the Italian Volleyball Federation, Giuseppe Manfredi.
“Having obtained qualification, the main objective now is to experience the next Olympic Games as protagonists. Showing up in Paris with two senior national teams, three beach volleyball pairs and the women’s sitting volleyball national team is truly an extraordinary result that rewards the many investments of the Federation and the great amount of work carried out by the entire Italian Volleyball delegation represents in the best way the strength of our entire movement”, added Manfredi.
