Sky Italia has decided to monopolize European football, keeping the television rights for itself Champions, Europe And Conference League. As far as is known Sun 24 Hours, the decision would be made. The three European competitions will not be shared with other broadcasters. And what’s more, the Italians’ matches will only be broadcast on the Sky platform or on Now. None of the matches involving our clubs in the new Champions League will therefore go unencrypted, not even up Tv8 flagship network of the Comcast media company.
The same scenario had been averted for the three-year period that has just ended. The assignment was conditioned by the Antitrust decision which had imposed a three-year preventative block on Sky in the acquisition of exclusives for the web, following the purchase, which in fact never even happened, of the R2 technological platform used by then Mediaset Premium for its broadcasts.
Once the ban was lifted, Sky focused decisively on European cups. Official figures have not been revealed, but the rumors circulating in 2023, the year of assignment, signaled an outlay of around 660 million euros for the television rights of the Champions League (185 matches out of 203 per season), Europa League and Conference League for the next three-year cycle from 2024 to 2027.
The new Champions
A great effort as a result of the fact that the 2024-2025 season will start new formula of the Champions League: it will be played 11 months out of 12 and the matches will be 47% more in total than in previous editions, with the number of teams participating in the final phase increasing from 32 to 36, all in a single group. From the summer, therefore, no more Champions visible on Mediaset which ended its three seasons in June (as per the rights acquired by UEFA) consisting of one match a week free to air on Canale 5 and a complete offer on Infinity. In the three European competitions – with the Europa League and Conference League also shared with Dazn until June – Sky will only have competition from Amazon which due to its Prime Video was awarded the best Champions League match of Wednesday.
Premier League and other championships
Even on foreign championships, Sky announced the renewal of the Premier League, broadcast exclusively – and streaming on Now – also for the 2024-2025 season. Then it will continue its presence on Sky for another 3 seasons, until 2027-2028. An offer, this one from Premier, which is added to Bundesliga And Ligue 1while La Liga is on Dazn.
While as regards the A leaguethe formula for the next five years remained the same:
three games a week for Sky with the entire top championship broadcast by Dazn. Now we just have to wait for the response from the audience of Italian football fans, who are constantly worried about the increase in prices.
