Gianluca Faustini and cycling for sustainable mobility

A singular sporting feat was completed to raise public awareness on a highly topical issue: sustainable mobility. Gianluca Faustini, AB employee and cycling enthusiast, cycled 500 kilometers in just 21 hours, leaving from the AB headquarters in Orzinuovi at 1am and returning to the base around 10pm the same day. The route wound through the low plain between Lombardy and Veneto, crossing 3 significant checkpoints for the theme linked to the company, namely the biomethane production plants of FemoGas in Schiavon in the Province of Vicenza, of Contarina SpA in the Province of Treviso and the Azienda Agricola Palazzetto in Grumello Cremonese, in the Province of Cremona. “Ride for Biomethane”, this is the name of the company, was born with the intention of promoting sustainable mobility which for AB is expressed in this case both in the production of biomethane (for which the Brescia company is a point of reference at worldwide), and in supporting the cycling venture of one’s employee. The bicycle and biomethane have their common denominator in sustainable mobility because even vehicles powered by biomethane can be considered as environmentally friendly as two wheels. The fuel used by vehicles powered by biomethane comes directly from livestock waste, agricultural cuttings and the organic fraction of separate waste collection. In fact, not everyone knows that what apparently appears to be “waste” is the origin of this fuel, a green energy source capable of moving even large vehicles and also producing excellent natural fertilizer.

For Gianluca it was significant to pass through three of the most important plants built by AB, touching on realities such as the FemoGas plant, which produces around 7,000 tonnes of liquid biomethane per year, the Contarina plant which produces 4 million cubic meters/year in part intended for introduction into the network and partly liquefied to feed the separate waste collection vehicles owned by the company and that of the Palazzetto Agricultural Company which obtains approximately 5 million cubic meters per year from livestock wastewater. At Contarina it was also possible to refuel the flagship, powered by biomethane, which followed the sporting feat: a real “full green” at zero KM!

Alongside Gianluca, together with AB, also Assault to Freedom, the athlete’s cycling team; Biomethane RNG Channel (the thematic channel dedicated to biomethane) as media partner; the three biomethane producing companies the tour passed by; the New Holland brand, which has always promoted sustainability in the agricultural sector; the CIB (Italian Biogas Consortium).
