Continues Formula 1 world championship of 2024: next June 9th we will race on the slopes of Montreal, Canada. The race is very close and exciting. 2024 started with several exciting new features that gave the category a major shake-up, making it decidedly more spectacular and competitive than a few years ago.

Among the most significant changes are the new technical regulations which have significantly changed the design of the single-seaters. The focus is on superior aerodynamic efficiency, but not only. In fact, we have been working for some time to make Formula 1 cars not only faster, but also more sustainable from an environmental point of view. All in view of the most important changes that will only take place from 2026 onwards.

Every weekend, the Formula 1 race gathers a very large number of fans in front of televisions all over the world. Many know very well everything behind these competitions, while many do not know all the terms. Today we explain what they mean undercut and overcut.

Formula 1, what is the Undercut

The undercut is one fundamental strategy in Formula 1 racing, a term that is very often mentioned during racing broadcasts. A pilot undercuts at the moment enters the pits to fit new tires before the driver in front.

The tire change must take place when the performance of his tires begins to decline and the driver in front also begins to lose time due to tire degradation. L’undercut is successful if the driver who was in second position before the stop manages to reduce the difference between him and his rival during the lap out of the pits and while the rival himself comes in to change tires.

What is Overcut

What is theOvercuts? This is the opposite strategy to the undercut, it occurs when a driver remains on the track despite his direct rival having entered the pits to fit new tyres. The driver who remains out must have tires in good condition and have managed them correctly, trying to create a sufficient advantage to maintain position when it is his turn to pit.

Overcutting is less common than undercutting, because it can only be used on circuits where tire degradation is minimal and where it is difficult to warm up new tires. If done correctly, the overcut can be a winning move.
