Ferrari Canada: engine and set-up for the GP in Montreal

The victory of Charles Leclerc in Monte Carlo it was a magical moment. But the Ferrari aims to exploit the positive momentum within the team to attempt another big shot in the Canadian GP, scheduled for Sunday in Montreal. Nothing was left to chance and the intense preparation program carried out on the Maranello simulator was confirmation of this: the engineers tested over thirty iterations on the dynamic benches, crossing the aerodynamic configurations with the suspension settings. A consolidated practice, but made even more dense and complete because in these tests eight different ways of using the power unit were adopted. In fact, the engine in Montreal plays a more important role than on other tracks, with a clear distinction on the track between the mixed section and the fast section, characterized by the very long straight that ends with the chicane before the finish line.

electric charge

At Imola it seemed that the power unit itself had represented a limit, with the SF-24 rather slow between turns 2 and 3. In Canada, effective management of the electric power will therefore be crucial to aim for success. The first section of the circuit is a tight alternation of acceleration and braking, typical of a “stop and go” track, where it is important to exploit the release and recharge phases to have sufficient residual power when tackling the very long final straight. For the engine technicians it was a question of finding the right balance between the energy used in the first two sectors of the track and that which is partially recovered during braking and when releasing the accelerator. The Maranello engineers, starting from a basic medium-low load aerodynamic set-up, tested ways of using the power unit that prevented the phenomenon of “clipping” at the end of the straight (i.e. the drop in maximum speed due to the exhaustion of the charge electric). Furthermore, a power delivery was found when exiting corners that would guarantee the best traction of the SF-24 in mixed conditions, without compromising performance in the fastest sector.

developments ok

According to rumours, the package of aerodynamic developments introduced in Imola did not require the need for a cross-check by comparing it on the simulator with the solutions adopted up to the previous race. In practice, the advanced version of Ferrari was passed with flying colours. In Canada, the single-seater will adopt a decidedly more streamlined aerodynamic configuration compared to Imola and Monte Carlo. Therefore it will be the “ground effect” bottom that guarantees the majority of the load. The race pace performance is considered the best feature of this year’s red, so much so that it also won in Australia with Carlos Sainz, on the day of Max Verstappen’s Red Bull withdrawal. A quality to be reiterated in Montreal, where the new asphalt surface will be one of the factors that could influence the teams’ management of tire degradation.
