No Umbrailpass? The riders ask for the Cima Coppi to be removed from the route of the 16th stage: too cold

After the cancellation of the Stelvio Pass, the 16th stage of the Giro d’Italia Livigno-Santa Cristina could be further modified and shortened. Me too’Umbrailpass, the new Cima Coppi of the 2024 edition, could be removed from the new route. The riders of the Giro are requesting it through the mouth of Adam Hansen, the president of the CPA or their union. The reason is that it is too cold at the top of the pass at 2498 meters on the border with Switzerland where it is currently snowing and it is around 3°C. What scares the runners, as always in these cases, is not so much the ascent but the downhill following the hilltop. The solutions agreed with RCS yesterday do not now convince the riders who, unanimously, asked for the removal of the Umbrailpass. The stage should thus start from Prato allo Stelvio.

MEETING ENDED: WE START FROM PRATO ALLO STELVIO

News from the departure in Livigno. The riders refused to ride any sections in neutral conditions and, as a result, RCS has decided that the race will take place as normal. RCS accepts that the race will start at Prato allo Stelvio. Now there is discussion about how the runners will get to the set point. This means no Umbrailpass and therefore no Cima Coppi.

HALF AN HOUR TO DEPARTURE? THE TEAMS WAIT

LIVIGNO, THERE IS CONFUSION AT THE DEPARTURE

The Tweet by Daniel Friebejournalist from The Cycling Podcast present at the Giro, is quite eloquent. Everyone in Livigno is waiting to hear the decision regarding today’s stage. And the departure scheduled for 11.15 am is getting closer and closer…

THE FIRST 70 KM CANCELED?

Official confirmation from RCS is awaited, but it seems that the teams’ joint request can be accepted. By doing so, the stage would be further shortened by 70 km from 206 km to 136 km. A restart from Spondigna is hypothesized at the end of the descent from the Umbarilpass.

THE WEATHER SITUATION ON THE ROUTE

The triathlete and ESPN journalist Marcelo La Gattina published this video on their social profiles. It’s already snowing in the first stretch of today’s stage and conditions at the summit seem to be worse. In Livigno, the starting point of today’s stage, it is raining and it is 7°C.

RUNNERS’ REQUESTS. ADAM HANSEN “WE INVOKE THE WEATHER PROTOCOL”

With a press release, the CPA communicated to the RCS organizers the will of 23 out of 23 teams present at the Giro to remove the descent from the Umbrailpass from the route of the stage. The request is therefore to start the stage after the descent, effectively eliminating the climb. The official departure from Livigno is for now kept at 11.15 am.

THE SOLUTION PROPOSED BY RCS YESTERDAY

Yesterday, RCS issued a statement that sanctioned the directives regarding today’s stage. In the event of a worsening of the weather situation during the race, RCS allowed the creation of “a parking area at the top of the Giogo di Santa Maria/Umbrailpass (after 50.2KM) to give runners the opportunity to change clothing”. “In case of extreme weather conditions” we always read in the press release “the stage will be neutralized until a place where the security conditions are met”. The protocol had been signed by both Cristian SalvatoRepresentative of the riders appointed by the CPA, who gives David McPartlandRepresentative of the teams appointed by the AIGCP for the Sports Directors as well as by Mauro Vegnidirector of the Giro, by the racing doctor Massimo Brancaby the safety manager Stefano Allocchio and by the President of the College of Commissioners Jeremy Ermens. Essentially, all the parties present at the Giro through their representatives agreed on the measures that would eventually be adopted.
