Away with the lowers, reduction in aerodynamics (fewer wings). Here are all the things you need to know to understand how MotoGP will change. For the organizers it will be: more sustainable, with more entertainment and more overtaking

May 6, 2024

“Welcome to the future of MotoGP: new bikes in 2027”, begins the press release announcing the new regulation which will come into force from 2027.

In the launch video, which you can find below, it is explained what the MotoGP will be safer, more sustainable, more spectacular and they will be there more overtaking.

But beyond the launch slogans Let’s try to better understand what changes.

MotoGP will introduce new motorbikes starting from 2027, with new regulationsso the first thing to know is new bikes with new regulations.

Let’s see all the news, chapter by chapter.

ENGINES, displacement reduction

Dto 2027 the displacement it will come reduced from 1000cc to 850cc. This will reduce the maximum speedsmaking MotoGP safer, more efficient and sustainable.

The maximum bore will shrink from 81 to 75 millimeters, which will also limit performance: “This makes the engines more suitable for the road and at the same time ensures that they maintain the characteristics that make MotoGP so spectacular” reads the press release.

To make the sport even more efficient, it will also be reduced the maximum number of engines allowed for each driver in a season, from seven to six.

FUEL, 100% sustainable

CAs already announced, MotoGP will compete with 100% sustainable fuel starting from 2027compared to the 40% minimum the sport has run at since 2024. As part of the new regulations, the tank capacity of fuel will be reduced, from 22 liters to 20 and drivers will be allowed to use 11 liters during the Sprint.

AERODYNAMICS, reduced

Laerodynamics will be reduced and monitored more closely from 2027, with the aim of minimizing its negative effects. The width from the top of the front fairing will be narrower by 50 mm and the nose will be pushed back by 50 mm, reducing the aerodynamic effect where it counts, on straights and in braking areas. According to the organizers “this will create even closer racing, with anchor more overtaking”. In essence: smaller wings.

At the rear, aerodynamics will be part of the homologation from 2027 and teams will be allowed to update it only once a season to control costs.

LOWERS, prohibited

Nothe new era starting from 2027, all Ride-Height and Holeshot devices they will be prohibited: “This will control performance and make the sport safer – we read in the press release -, above all during departures of competitions. This will also give you even more importance to the skill of each pilotjust like aerodynamics, is aimed at increasing one’s overtaking ability.”

GPS DATA, available to everyone

Pto further level performance i GPS data of all pilots will be available for all teams after each session. Provide data to all competitors offers better opportunities progress for the less performing teams and riders, and at a controlled cost. Access to this range of data will help make the safest sport and it will also increase the level of information available to fans around the world.

CONCESSIONS

Lthe current concession systemintroduced at the end of the 2023 season, will continue, but with the new technical regulations coming into force in 2027, all manufacturers will start the season in the B classification.

They will then be evaluated again mid-season, in summer 2027, and will be able to move up or down in rank to gain access to more or less benefits. This responsive system ensures that manufacturers’ performance is taken into account from day one, keeping the playing field as close as possible to the start of a new era.
