After the reform of the Minister of Sport Andrea Abodi which puts forward the hypothesis of establishing a control agency for the accounts of Italian football clubs, the historic agent Giovanni Branchini was interviewed by Tuttomercatoweb.com to discuss the topic: “Three things come to mindessentially. There is absolutely no effort at self-regulation, cleanliness or control. So you have to justify what normally, in an idealistically functioning world, shouldn’t happen. Sport must have autonomy, but also the honesty to invest in control and compliance with current regulations. We agents have been denouncing for fifteen years how young players’ powers of attorney are bought and no one lifts a finger despite this representing a clear infringement of the rules.”
And the third?
“We all hope that someone will raid FIFA and force it to do its duty, then do the same with UEFA. They would have the power, the structures and the economic means to manage and regulate our world but they are too worried about organizing events , produce income and maintain the seat, it would be a scandal if a higher body decided to do so…”.
But isn’t there a risk that FIFA and UEFA will exclude Italian teams?
“We are all convinced that in the end there will be a Super League or something similar. If those who decide today have not yet understood that they are going in the wrong direction, we will reach a point in which the clubs will inevitably do something private, they will self-regulate and they will manage their universe independently.”
Returning to the control agency, how will it end?
“Posting a blind denial and such a total refusal… is politically understandable and perhaps even “due” but it does not seem strategically noble as a reaction. Nonetheless, I have always had great faith in the person of President Gravina and I hope that he will be able to manage even this little crisis is better.”
