Juventus, the Champions League accounts
In Turin the Champions League counts, here is the current situation three days before the end of the championship: Juventus third with 66 points, Bologna fourth with 64, Roma fifth with 60 and Atalanta sixth with 57, but with two games less than their direct opponents: the one in Salerno, tonight, and the one to be recovered against Fiorentina at a later date. However, there is a direct clash on the calendar which makes it easier for the Bianconeri and that is next matchday: Atalanta-Roma. That is, fifth against sixth. And, by virtue of the results obtained by the Italians in European competitions, they will be the first five in Serie A to qualify for the next Champions League.
If Atalanta beats Roma, Juventus’ qualification is already arithmetic: Roma in sixth place could only possibly catch up with the Bianconeri but remain behind due to direct clashes. However, if the two draw at Juventus you only need one point for math. If Roma wins, the Bianconeri will need three points. This is because in a possible three-way finish at 69 points in the separate standings, Roma would have 5 points, Juve 6 and Atalanta 3. So if Roma were to win in Bergamo, Allegri’s team would still need 3. And since Roma Juve plays first, it would be enough to beat Salernitana and the result of Atalanta-Roma would be irrelevant for Juventus.
