the shock announcement, Serie A referee resigns

I’ll end it here, together with the strongest of all, the man who was beside me in the most difficult moment of my life… I leave refereeing and any other role within my beloved association. After 20 years, a journey that made me the man and father I am now ends“. With these words on his Instagram profile Manuel Volpi announces his resignation as referee after having directed the match between Cremonese and Pisa in Serie B yesterday. Born in 1988, from the Arezzo section, Volpi clarified on social media that he “resigned due to a very serious personal problem“.

Volpi’s post

I thank all my colleaguesfrom the President to the kids who dream of arriving in Serie A. I thank you all Presidents, sporting directors, managers and coachesfrom Spalletti to the top 2 of my first rookie race“, he wrote again on social media, publishing a photo with Daniele Orsato. “I thank the playersfrom the champions that I had the honor of knowing to the children who hope to become one…. everyone remember that we are always more sorry than you when we make mistakes because our only aim is to give the best service to football…“, goes on. “I thank all the players today cwho had the usual exemplary behavior towards me and at the end of the race they accepted everything I explained to them about my work… it was wonderful to be part of this world who took me to the children at San Siro“, concludes Volpi.

The controversies after Cremonese-Pisa

Volpi, a 35-year-old referee from Città della Pieve belonging to the Aia section of Arezzo, has said enough after 20 years of career. He ends with a race direction that is anything but memorable, that of the Serie B match between Cremonese and Pisa. Various incidents were contested: from the penalty interpreted incorrectly and awarded to the Grigiorossi thanks to the intervention of the VAR, to the dubious foul given to the Lombards which resulted in Coda’s final 2-1, amid protests from the Tuscans. Regarding this latest episode, at the end of the match the Pisa coach Aquilani reported what was reported to him by his players: “The referee admitted he had made a mistake and apologised, but could not change the decision”.
