F1 Newey: “Thanks Red Bull, but for me it’s time for new challenges”

Adrian Newey-Red Bull is a combination that has been synonymous with victory. Of many victories. Under the technical direction of the iconic 65-year-old English engineer, 7 drivers’ and 6 constructors’ world titles were achieved, with 117 GP victories. But like all stories, this one too has found its epilogue. In the press note released by Red Bull, Newey explained the situation as follows: “Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to become a designer of racing cars. My dream was to become an engineer in Formula 1 and I was lucky enough to transform that dream reality. For almost two decades it has been my great honor to have played a key role in the progress of Red Bull Racing from a rookie team to a multi-winning team. However, I feel that now is an appropriate time to pass the baton to others and seek new challenges“. And the new challenge by definition, which Newey is seriously thinking about, is certainly Ferrari.

last job

There is still one project to complete at Red Bull: “In the meantime, the final stages of the RB17 development are upon us,” he said, “so for the remainder of my time with the team my attention will be focused on this. I would like to thank the many amazing people I have worked with at Red Bull on our journey over the last 18 years for their talent, dedication and hard work. It has been a real privilege and I am confident that the engineering team is well prepared for the work they will bring final evolution of the car within the four-year period of this technical regulation. On a personal level, I would also like to thank the shareholders, the late Dietrich Mateschitz, Mark Mateschitz and Chalerm Yoovidhya for their unwavering support during my time at Red Bull. , and Christian (Horner; ed.), who was not only my business partner but also a friend of our respective families. Also, thanks to Oliver Mintzlaff for his management and to Eddie Jordan, my dear friend and manager.”

Horner speaks

The team principal’s words were also very celebratory Christian Horner: “All our greatest moments of the last 20 years have come with Adrian’s hand at the technical helm – he said – his vision and brilliance have helped us win 13 titles in 20 seasons. His exceptional ability to conceptualize beyond F1 and to bring wider inspiration to GP car design, his extraordinary talent for embracing change and finding the most favorable rule areas to focus on, and his relentless will to win have helped Red Bull to become a greater force than, I think, even the late Dietrich Mateschitz could have imagined. Two decades and 13 championships later, he leaves as a true legend. He is also my friend and someone I will be eternally grateful for everything it brought. The legacy he leaves will echo through the halls of Milton Keynes and the RB17 Track Car will be a fitting testament and legacy to his time with us.”
