“The Giro d’Italia? A sporting event not to be missed, as well as a precious opportunity to raise awareness of the beauties of our territory.” Word of Gabriele Martinazzo, sportsman and great cycling enthusiast who, in our notebooks, wanted to confide his emotions in view of the great return of the pink caravan.
“I have always had a deep interest in this type of event – he says – ever since I was a boy, as well as witnessing, like many others, Marco Pantani’s great feat in the 1999 stage where he arrived first at the Sanctuary of Oropa. Then came 2007, with all the trepidations of the case. Since then, I have always dreamed of the Giro d’Italia returning to the Biella area.”
An objective that also saw him personally involved. “As president of the then ATL of Biella, he was one of the promoters who worked hard to bring this sporting event back in 2014. I have always believed in the potential of our province. Biella and the Giro d’Italia: an increasingly concrete and consolidated combination over time”.
The pink race will also be an opportunity to see great champions and old friends again. “Like Vladimir Belli – confides Martinazzo – great protagonist of the Giro between the 90s and the following decades. He will be present in Callabiana on March 4th in the Callabiana party area together with Gianni Bugno and the Eurosport commentators Riccardo Magrini and Luca Gregorio. A further opportunity to make our wonderful reality known.”
From the widespread greenery to the uncontaminated and breathtaking landscapes, to the villages suspended in time: the Biella area seems precisely suited to sporting events with a national and international scope. “These events are an important driving force for the promotion of our places – explains Martinazzo – Perhaps the people of Biella themselves should believe a little more in their own potential”.
